The GLOBAL HUNGER AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL GHDA was dissolved at
the national ELCIC convention in July, 2009.

However, this ministry will continue through the integration of GHDA into
the work of Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR)

GHDA REPORT TO SYNOD CONVENTION for download (June 2008)

What was GHDA?

The Global Hunger and Development Appeal was a standing appeal of the ELCIC through which members were encouraged to respond to the needs of the poor, the disenfranchised and the marginalized both in Canada and around the world.

The largest portion (~70%) of GHDA receipts were directed to Canadian Lutheran World Relief for development work abroad. Some funds were given to the synods to support social justice initiatives in Canada (more information for congregational projects / application form). The balance of the receipts were allocated to support advocacy and education work through coalitions and ministries such as Kairos: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, PLURA, the Lutheran Office for Public Policy, Quetzacoatl (our missionary Brian Rude in El Salvador is involved with this project),  Project Ploughshares,  the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance and other projects.

GHDA also maintained an Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund to provide emergency assistance anywhere in the world  immediately.
