Bishop's Office Message for March, 2005
Dear Partners in Ministry,
As we move through Lent toward Holy Week and Easter, I am reminded that there are many among us who walk through a valley that feels a lot like death. Many of our farmers and ranchers continue to be affected by a crisis in agriculture the extent of which may not be known for quite some time. The closure of the US border to live cattle from Canada has devastated a significant number of producers, many of them members of our congregations. But the crisis is not limited to beef. Grain farmers are also affected. While some experienced good crops this past year, many did not. They are caught in a continual squeeze between rising input costs over which they have no control, and falling commodity markets worldwide, another force beyond their control. Some are in danger of losing farms that have been in their family for four generations. Farmers who are under extreme pressure often remove themselves from congregations, and have a hard time coming to church.
Thanks to the hunger program of the ELCA, and assistance from some of their staff, we gathered
about 30 farmers/ranchers from Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Montana on January 25-26 in
Medicine Hat. We discovered that farmers on both sides of the border have similar concerns. We
also learned that there are many misconceptions about each others' countries and farm programs,
and it was good to get some of those cleared up. We worshiped together, ate together, and talked
a lot. A comment was made several times how important it was to talk with other farmers. With
our rural communities under stress from disappearing grain elevators, schools, hospitals, and
stores, congregations can provide a catalyst for community building throughout our rural areas.
Find ways to gather your farmers to talk with one another. Take note when a farmer does not
come to church any more, and follow up to see what is wrong. I encourage urban congregations
to make connections with our rural sisters and brothers. Take your confirmation classes to a farm,
so that young people make some connection with the source of their food. Pray for our farmers as
they go through difficult times. Walk with them in this Lenten journey toward Easter and
resurrection. They need our support.
In the name of our crucified and risen Lord Jesus,
